You’re about to end off your magical date after an evening of good banter, but before you both get into your cars to drive off, they lean in for a hug. He or she hugs you and their arms find their way around your waist. You’re holding your breath, with hopes that they don’t feel your love handles. They miss and you let out a sigh of release because you forgot to do your side crunches today.

Ask any woman about her favourite body part and she probably won’t speak about her amazing love handles – that excess fat that sits on the side of the waist, also known by its no less cute name: muffin top.

Research says that napping can lead to a brain boost during the day, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

University of California-Riverside psychologist Sara Mednick found way back in 2003 that people do better with a visual learning task after they’ve had a good night’s sleep, and not right after they learn it. Mednick also determined that the same test advantage occurred after a 60-90 minute nap.

“What’s amazing is that in a 90-minute nap, you can get the same [learning] benefits as an eight-hour sleep period,” Mednick told the American Psychological Association. “And actually, the nap is having an additive benefit on top of a good night of sleep.”

A more recent study from University of Michigan doctoral student Jennifer Goldschmied and colleagues showed that people who got a 60-minute nap in the middle of the day helped them cope better with difficult people, an effect scientifically described as a boosted tolerance for frustration.

A veggie bake is the easiest way to bulk up a dinner party meal because it seriously takes a lot to mess one up. And if it happens to be vegan, you’ll be covered for any plant-based guests you forgot were coming.

They’re also great because they’re super versatile, so you can pretty much add any veggies you have in the fridge. And veggie bakes are easy to upgrade into a lasagne, if you feel like going through the extra few steps.

This veggie bake is an aubergine bake with a thick tomato sauce. Again, you can jazz up the sauce whichever way you like, but this one uses chilli (optional, of course) and basil. If you didn’t want to make your own tomato sauce, you could buy your favourite brand from the store, but this recipe is so easy and delicious, it’s really not necessary to go the store-bought route.

Mental health and promoting an empathetic discussion around it has been the centre of Deepika Padukone’s agenda ever since she came out with her story of dealing with depression. Deepika became one of the first celebrities in Bollywood to break the stigma and start an open dialogue around mental health.

In fact, four years ago when she launched her project Live Love Laugh Foundation, aimed at doing the same, she received a lot of acclaim for it. And now, taking another step towards helping people battle depression, Deepika launched her first lecture series on mental health last night, in Delhi.

At the launch event of her lecture series, Deepika talked about the journey of her foundation. She said, “I think it has been an incredible journey. The Live Love Laugh foundation has been here for four years now. As far as the conversation around the importance of mental health is concerned, I think that we have come a long way. I think the media has had a huge role to play in opening up the conversation in various ways. Whether it is interviews, write-ups, articles, it’s come through in various ways.”

She also opened up on how her lecture series will help people cope up with depression, “I think we most certainly have a long way to go and that’s why we have the lecture series today. We invited people from different professions, various parts of the world, but most importantly, people who are passionate about mental health and have them talk to us about their journeys, their experiences. I think this will open up the conversation and take it to the next level.”

Talking about the problems she faced in this journey, Deepika said, “I think the conversation has really opened up. I don’t think there is as much stigma as there used to be four years ago. But we certainly have a long way to go in creating awareness. I think that’s where we need to keep the conversation alive.”

Formula Overview

$26.00/0.12 oz. – $216.67 Per Ounce

NARS has reformulated their core lipstick range, which now includes 72 shades across three finishes: matte, sheer, and satin. The formula is supposed to go on “smoothly and evenly with a light feel” that is “long-lasting” and “resistant to bleeding and feathering.” The sheer finish has “subtle, sheer color that shines,” while the satin finish has “creamy rich color” and the matte finish has “intense color with a velvety finish.”

The matte finish has a very thin, featherweight feel to it, but they didn’t feel clingy or too prone to dragging during application, though they were definitely a firmer texture in the tube. There was enough glide from the inclusion of dimethicone (first ingredient for the matte finish) that went on evenly, felt velvety but didn’t feel as powder-like as some of the other more silicone-heavy matte lipstick formulas that have been released in the last couple of years. Most shades were pigmented and nearly opaque to opaque. The wear ranged from three to six hours with deeper, richer shades staying on a bit longer and leaving slight stains. They were comfortable to wear but felt more non-drying than particularly hydrating.

The satin finish has more slip, feels thicker (though not actually thick or heavy) compared to the matte finish, and of course, there was subtle to light shine/sheen. They applied smoothly, comfortably, and for the most part, went on evenly and didn’t sink noticeably into my lip lines but there was some variance between shades. They were typically semi-opaque to opaque in coverage with four to six-hour wear that was lightly hydrating.

The sheer finish had coverage that ranged from semi-sheer to true medium coverage but most had some translucency to them, which gave them a sheerer finish. I found most of the shades I tried were buildable to some degree. The texture was a bit firmer, but they felt more emollient and “melted” a bit more against my lips than I recall the original line of lipsticks doing. Some shades applied well with even application and were flattering on, but there were a few that sank more noticeably into my lip lines. This finish tended to wear between three and five hours.

I don’t have many of NARS’ original lipsticks in my stash (I have mostly Audacious as they haven’t been releasing many in the core range) to compare to. The matte finish was definitely thinner, more matte, and had a velvetier look on lips compared to the original which had a subtle sheen to it. The satin finish seemed a bit more pigmented and not quite as luminous/glossy as the previous formula, while the sheer finish was creamier, more emollient, and was easier to apply. It didn’t feel like a vastly different formula, but it felt a bit easier to work with (smoother, more emollient but still lighterweight and thin, far less slip than any of the Audacious range) and was more comfortable to wear across the board for me.

I didn’t notice any scent or taste, though there is “fragrance (parfum)” listed in the ingredients–it smelled neutral, not waxy but I just didn’t get any scent.

Not getting enough sleep may lead to sexual dysfunction in some populations, according to new research.

A recent study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine followed nearly 4,000 men and women in their early- to mid-60s for a year and found that poor sleep was associated with erectile dysfunction for men, and arousal problems and orgasmic difficulty for women. True, these were older folks, who are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea (a known culprit for an unhealthy sex life), and overall health issues that might impact their slumber.

But sleep apnea is on the rise in younger generations — especially in men — and guess what, guys? No matter what your age, a lack of sleep impacts your levels of testosterone. Low levels of testosterone can lead to a lack of sexual desire and erectile dysfunction.

Here’s how those are connected: It turns out that your highest levels of that important hormone occur during REM sleep, which is the deep, healing sleep that occurs late in the sleep cycle. Your first REM will last about 10 minutes, but as the night goes on REM stages grow longer, with the final one lasting up to an hour. So, if you don’t sleep long enough to enter REM sleep, you don’t get those restorative levels of circulating testosterone.

Best Ever Sloppy Joes! These cook in one pot, with ground beef, onions, garlic, carrots, and celery, in sweet-and-sour tomato sauce. Served messy on purpose, over hamburger buns.

Photography Credit:
Elise Bauer

Just hearing the words “sloppy joes” from my mother used to send us kids into a tizzy. There was something wonderfully fun about getting to eat a burger/sandwich that was messy by design.

I first posted this recipe years ago, after making it for my visiting young nephew. Sloppy joes really are a quintessential kid food, aren’t they?

After my nephew explained to me that he didn’t like tomatoes with his hamburger and he wanted his onions on top, I explained to him that sloppy joes are made with the onions mixed in with the beef. And he eats spaghetti, so what’s wrong with tomatoes, anyway?

He relented.

When called to dinner he ate the whole thing (and loved it)!

Sloppy JoeSloppy Joe

Sloppy JoeSloppy Joe

What’s a Sloppy Joe?

Depending on where you live, a “Sloppy Joe” can mean many different things. The Sloppy Joe I love is the one I’m presenting here—a sweet and tangy ground beef concoction that you ladle onto a hamburger bun.

It’s a mess. Intentionally so. Even though it’s in a bun, it must be eaten with a fork.

How to Make Sloppy Joes

What makes this sloppy joe extra special is that I start with a mirepoix, or sauté of minced carrots, onions, and celery. Then I brown the ground beef and pull everything together with a highly flavored tomato sauce. It’s one of my favorite recipes on the site. I hope you like it, too!

Tips for Making the Best Sloppy Joes

  • Prep veggies in a food processor: Make prep a breeze by coarsely chopping the onion, celery, and carrots and then pulsing them a few times in the food processor (carrots first; you can do the onions and celery together).
  • Work in batches: This way you don’t crowd the pan when browning the beef.
  • Don’t stir the beef: Once you add the beef, don’t stir the meat much until it has browned well on one side.
  • Add water if needed: If the sloppy joe meat looks like it is getting dry while you simmer it, just add some water to get the consistency you want.

Can You Freeze Leftovers?

You can freeze these for up to 3 months. Just transfer the cooked and cooled mix to a zip-top freezer bag, lay it flat in the freezer (saves space), and freeze.

When it’s time to reheat, put it in a saucepan with a little water, heat it through, and serve with freshly toasted hamburger buns.

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A GOOD MESSY SANDWICH?

Updated September 4, 2019 : We spiffed up this post to make it sparkle. No changes to the original recipe.

Best Ever Sloppy Joes Recipe

Save time on prep by pulsing roughly chopped veggies in a food processor.

Brown the meat well. Don’t crowd the pan, work in batches, and don’t stir the meat until it is well browned on one side.

Ingredients

Method

1 Sauté the carrots, onions, celery, and garlic: Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan on medium high heat. Add the minced carrots and sauté for 5 minutes. (If you are using bell pepper instead of carrots, add those at the same time as the onions.)

Add the chopped onion and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally until onions are translucent, about 5 more minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 more seconds. Remove from heat. Remove vegetables from the pan to a medium sized bowl, set aside.

Sloppy Joes saute the carrotsSloppy Joes saute the carrots Sloppy Joe RecipeSloppy Joe Recipe

2 Brown the ground beef: Using the same pan (or you can cook the meat at the same time as the vegetables in a separate pan to save time), crumble the ground beef into the pan. If you are using extra lean beef, you may need to add a tablespoon of olive oil to the pan. Sprinkle the meat with salt.

Do not stir the ground beef, just let it cook until it is well browned on one side. Then flip the pieces over and brown the second side.

If you’re cooking in batches, use a slotted spoon to remove the ground beef from the pan (can add to the set-aside vegetables) and repeat with the rest of the ground beef.

When the meat is done cooking, strain off all but 1 tablespoon of any fat left in the pan.

3 Make the sloppy joe mix: Return the cooked ground beef and vegetables to the pan. Use a wooden spoon to break up any chunks of ground beef into smaller bits.

Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and brown sugar to the pan. Stir to mix well. Add ground cloves, thyme, and cayenne pepper.

Lower the heat to medium low and let simmer for 10 minutes. Adjust seasonings to taste.
