Years ago, you were young with little responsibility. You wanted to pack on muscle, shed fat, and gain superhuman strength. You trained six days a week for two hours at a time. You felt invincible.

 

Then, you matured and life changed.

 

 

Today, you tackle high-level work projects. You have family functions to attend. The days of training six days a week for two hours each session are long gone. Now, you’re lucky if you lift two days a week for an hour.

 

The pounds have crept on. You feel lazy and tired. The thought of being in the gym for two hours is as painful as watching grass grow. You need an iron-clad training plan that gets you in and out of the gym in four hours or less each week so you can dominate every day.

 

If only there was someone who could concoct the magic potion that enabled busy lifters to maintain strength and protect muscle, while they shed stubborn fat.

 

Well, behold! I present to you the 4-Hour Fat Loss Elixir for Busy Lifters.

 

Put a Strangle Hold on Your Muscle

The first instinct for some lifters is to trade lifting sessions for hours of slow, boring, steady-state cardio. I understand because I’ve been there.

 

Four years ago, I lost 14 pounds in a year. Ten came from fat and the remaining four were stolen from muscle. You may think four pounds isn’t much, but on an athletic 5’9” and 170lb frame, it’s massive.

 

Imagine lining up four lean, mouthwatering 16oz steak filets. Now, picture those filets as thick slabs of muscle on your back, chest, shoulders, or arms.

 

It’s the difference between you having a “skinny fat” body versus a muscular body.

 

It’s the difference between you having enough muscle to fill out a medium versus a large sized t-shirt.

 

 

Learn from my blunders. If you want to reveal a lean and muscular body, don’t skimp on weights.

 

A caloric deficit is required for you to lose body fat. You must burn more calories than you consume. When you’re in a caloric deficit, maintaining strength and muscle are key. When you consume less calories, your body wants to snatch energy from any available source. Sometimes, it wants to feast on muscle.

 

Don’t let this happen. Your body needs a reason to protect your hard-earned muscle. Lifting weights is the solution. In a fat loss phase, if you consistently practice the three mechanisms for muscle growth, you’ll keep a muscular physique as you shed fat. What are they?

 

Mechanism 1: Mechanical Tension

This is the process of progressive overload or an increase in strength over time. You need to generate as much force as possible through a full range of motion. Rarely does this require someone to perform their one-rep max on a lift. You should perform reps in the range of 3-5. Contract the correct muscles and lift the weight with maximal force every repetition.

 

Mechanism 2: Muscular Damage

Do you need to torture your muscles into oblivion? No. You can accomplish muscle damage in various ways. Create muscle damage with the use of a slower tempo on the eccentric (unloaded) portion of an exercise, an angle change to target a different part of a muscle, an increase in weight, or stretching a muscle under tension.

 

Mechanism 3: Metabolic Stress

Here, you chase the pump. It’s that time at the end of a set when your muscles become exhausted and you feel a deep burn.

 

Plus, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. Lifters with a higher ratio of muscle to fat have increased resting energy expenditures.3 Therefore, even when you don’t have a ton of time, you’ll burn more calories while doing nothing because you made lifting a priority.

 

The best approach for you is to lift to protect your muscle. Use your diet to shed fat. If you need a reminder, repeat this message to your yourself or go old-school and write it 100 times on a chalkboard like a kid sent to detention:  

 

“I will lift weights to build and protect my muscle. I will use my diet to shed fat.”

 

Protect Your Muscle With Heavy Days

The first two ingredients in your elixir are separate lower and upper body heavy training days. The goal is to maintain or (in some cases) build strength.

 

Below is your concoction for heavy days:

 

  • CNS activation
  • Primary strength movement
  • Antagonist strength movement
  • Primary support exercise for the strength exercise
  • Secondary support exercise for the antagonist strength movement

 

Each session begins with an explosive movement to activate your central nervous system (CNS). CNS activation prepares your nervous system for the imposed neurological demands in the proceeding strength-based exercise. Jumps, throws, and slams are perfect examples.

 

Next, advance to your primary strength movement of the day. The movement makes your body more responsive to building and protecting muscle by improving your neural efficiency. Why is this important for you? Neuromuscular adaptions to heavier loading allow contractions to be forceful and efficient. This means that we can use more of the full potential of our existing muscle mass.1 This results in higher testosterone levels, a greater capacity to build muscle in the future, and a better-looking body

 

Each session ends with a support exercise for your strength movements. It gives you the opportunity to train the muscles responsible for maximizing each movement pattern. Since your CNS has been activated, take advantage of what’s called post tetanic potentiation (PAP). When your muscles produce a maximal effort, it increases the capacity of the nervous system to recruit muscle fibers during subsequent efforts. If you begin with a heavy lift, the remainder of the workout will be more effective because you can recruit more muscle fibers.4 For the support exercises, use heavy/moderate weight.

 

Protect Your Muscle With Light Days

The next two ingredients in your fat loss elixir are two separate lower and upper body light training days. The goals for these days are to provide your CNS a break and force lactate production to release growth hormone for fat loss.

 

Remember, you’re busy and stressed with work and family matters. When you train with heavier weights, it places an immense amount of stress on your body and CNS. Give each ample recovery time from the intense neurological demands of heavy lifts. The solution is the inclusion of two lighter weight days. Lighter weights don’t require use of your CNS. For these sessions, teach your muscles to flex and keep them under constant tension. You’ll fix underdeveloped muscles and build a better mind-muscle connection.

 

Your ability to maintain constant tension for at least 40 seconds forces lactate production which leads to the release of growth hormone. Growth hormone regulates whole body metabolism, and physical exercise is the most potent stimulus to induce its secretion in humans.2 Since we need to maintain tension longer on these days, the reps are 12 or more with shorter rest periods between exercises. You’ll remain focused, elevate your heart rate, and burn more calories because you’re training more muscles in less time.

 

Plus, you must hit muscle failure on some exercises. Muscle failure is the signal for creating muscle growth and protein synthesis. Sure, your goal isn’t to pack on muscle. However, stimulating the process of protein synthesis during a fat loss phase increases your body’s ability to maintain muscle. Failure will be achieved by extending sets with the use of two methods: drop sets and rest/pause.

 

  1. For drop sets, you train close to failure. Then, drop the weight anywhere from 15 to 25% and perform as many reps as possible until failure.
  2. On rest/pause sets, you also train close to failure. Then, you rest for 10-15 seconds. Once time has passed, you knock out more reps until failure.

 

Below is your concoction for lights days:

 

  • Reps of 12+
  • Failure
  • Unilateral exercises
  • Antagonist supersets

 

When life gets crazy and trips to the gym are inconsistent, your muscles become fragile. Do you feel like one arm or leg is weaker than the other? Maybe you have a tough time flexing your muscles on one side of your body. When one side is weaker than the other, it makes you feel like you’re not getting enough from your workouts. Regain your muscle with unilateral movements and feel invincible again. Unilateral refers to a movement where each side is training independently. Unilateral training helps you fix muscle imbalances, improve your explosiveness and athleticism, and add variety to your workouts. Each light day begins with a unilateral superset.

 

You’ll perform antagonist supersets so you can crush multiple muscles at once without a decrease in strength. This method consists of pairing two exercises of opposing muscle groups in a superset (two exercises performed consecutively). There is a brief rest between the exercises and moderate rest after a set of both have been completed.

 

Your Training Plan

Day 1 – Heavy Lower Body Day

 

  1. Vertical Jumps – 3 x 5, rest 60 sec
  2. Front Squats – 5 x 3-5, rest 2-3 min
  3. Barbell RDL – 4 x 6-8, rest 90-120 sec
  4. Dumbbell Bulgarian Split Squat – 3 x 8-10 per leg (slow eccentric), rest 75-90 sec
  5. Lying or Seated Hamstring Curl – 3 x 8-10 (rest/pause on the last two sets), rest 75-90 sec

 

Day 2 – Rest

 

Day 3 – Heavy Upper Body Day

 

  1. Incline Plyo Push Up – 3 x 5, rest 60 sec
  2. Incline Barbell Bench Press – 5 x 3-5, rest 2-3 min
  3. Pendlay Row – 4 x 6-8, rest 90-120 sec
  4. Dips – 3 x 8-10 (slow eccentric), rest 75-90 sec
  5. Supinated Pull Ups or Supinated Lat Pulldown – 3 x 8-10 (rest/pause on the last two sets), rest 75-90 sec

Life is short. Don’t spend an eternity in the gym. Each workout should take you no more than an hour. Take four to six weeks and use this plan so you can feel invincible again. You deserve the chance to dominate work, rest, and play every day, in every way.

We are clever creatures. Too clever. We can build Hadron Colliders, fly to the moon, and perform heart surgery. But when it comes to applying our cleverness to our own Philosophically problematic psyches, everything goes downhill faster than you can say, “I am envious of my Dad’s dick. Because Freud said so.” As if that’s the only explanation necessary. 

The cleverest of clever people sometimes get over-excited and propose that we are close to developing human-like AI. But we are not systematically assembled like Hadron Colliders or space shuttles: we are filled with a host of irreducible passions which hence fail understandability and replicability – things we feel and do for reasons that neither can be nor need be explained, the things AI will never incorporate, for obvious reasons. (In comes Freud and friends to try and make a Hadron Collider out of the mind, or maybe to just mess with us.) 

The best solution, so far, to the “problem” of being irreducibly human (and hence susceptible to the dementedly clever ideas of totalitarians and charlatans) is America. The American Constitution is not a piece of social programming designed to cleverly direct supposed “understandable” behavior (apparently, in my country, teaching a Pug the “Nazi Salute” requires state intervention), but simply an attempt to manage irreducible unexplainable passions so that we don’t kill ourselves or others. This is “freedom” – a ingenious idea, because it leaves the irreducible human untouched since it has been demonstrably obvious that it can’t be touched safely. But, that’s the obvious part (which, incidentally, I’m not very good at explaining because I’m not a Philosopher).  

As a child I lined up toy cars and stacked cans of beans. I wasn’t making “normal” eye contact either. I screamed if I was taken into a busy shop. 

It was therefore time for human cleverness to step in and “make sense” of my irreducible unexplainable passions simply by pointing at my behaviors. I was taken to specialist pediatricians and at first I was labeled with the latest fashionable diagnosis (“ADHD”) and later “Asperger’s Syndrome” because I didn’t want to sit in the classroom learning about numbers – instead I wanted to look for insects in the playground bushes. I was given Ritalin to alter my brain chemistry and make me calmer. I suppose they alter external behavior because they think they have license to alter my mind (which, as we have recently determined, nobody does but me). But really, they should have just let me be, unless I was hurting myself or others – the way we accommodate “trans-activists” (imagine the horror if we forced trans-activists to take Ritalin?). 

When I got a bit older I started thriving – in your teens you can run around screaming and throwing fruit at teachers and nobody cares, I think, because adolescence is understood to be a time of irreducible unexplainable passions. So nobody notices if you are a bit “strange.” 

But University is where things got very dicey. Behavior was extremely regulated – students were almost too nervous to speak lest they might “offend” someone; hell, it felt like if your heart rate was below 60 bpm or over 100bpm, Student Services would quickly offer you support. And by God, many of us did need support after we capitulated under the weight of behavioral regulation. 

I slowly bought into the idea that I was different, but I had doubts sometimes, which psychotherapists wanted me to “overcome” so I could accept my predicament and “move on.” Many of the other people around me in my situation bought into the diagnosis narrative (instead of just allowing themselves to be irreducibly human), and would even introduce themselves as X who suffers from Y diagnosis. I didn’t go that far down the rabbit hole, thankfully, but diagnosis did heavily feature in my identity, and those of us who lapped up the milk that diagnosis offers (oh God, did I love lapping up the milk) found ourselves shrinking away from the “normality” that pills and “support” was supposed to help us cope with. The Irony! 

After university, I was a shell of my teen self. I couldn’t go outside. I had a caregiver who would go shopping for me because people were too “stimulating.” But, having the irreducible unexplainable passions that I did, I wanted a dog. So I got a dog. People would ask why I got a dog, but I reserve my right to be irreducibly human, okay? 

Anyway, at first I would walk my dog at night to avoid people, but one day he got sick with food poisoning, and because I cared about him I climbed out of my introverted self-diagnostic ass and took him to the vet. I cared about my dog so much that I didn’t care about myself, and I was forcibly exposed to what my SS Coach Noah called “social stress” – I slowly adapted to the demands and expectations of social interaction, a bit like LP. 

Yes, that’s right: one day I had an irreducible unexplainable passion and wanted to do LP after reading Starting Strength and used my ridiculous “welfare” money (or milk, let’s say) to get a coach. Maybe, if we try to apply our cleverness, might we determine that I’m a psychopathic parasite who is feeding off the state to advance himself? Maybe. But don’t worry, you guys, at least the victim’s blood is flowing across the Atlantic. 

At first I could barely go into the gym. It made me feel sick. I also wore a hoodie because I was ashamed of my corpse-like physique which would make even the bubble-esque Rip look anorexic. But then, slowly but surely, I started not giving a fuck about what I looked like – I cared about the weight on the bar, not the weight of my body in relation to everyone else. I started caring about me, not what was “normal.” My cleverness wasn’t being applied to the pointless analysis of irreducible human passions; it was being applied to my training (and to my dog, of course). 

And guess what? That’s where I am now. Maybe I’m writing this all too early, because there’s more to come on the road to becoming irreducibly human. But regardless, I am excited to find out if strength is truly the only thing that matters in the final analysis: let’s see what clever brains have to say about the significance of my lack of eye contact when I’m strong.

February is the month to set your slow cooker on the counter and let it work its magic, transforming a tough hunk of meat into tender shreds, like it does in this downright delicious slow cooker beef soup with couscous, made with beef, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, tomatoes, herbs, and pearl couscous.

First, a confession: this was supposed to be a beef and barley soup. Buuuuuuut Daniel came back from the store with pearl couscous (he swore he grabbed the pearl barley), so I decided to go with it—and let me tell you, the results are delicious.

The soup has all the rich, savory flavor of a long-simmered beef stew, only it’s lighter and more brothy, with fall-apart-tender chunks of beef and an aromatic beef broth made with garlic, onion, carrot, celery, bay leaves, fresh thyme, and a bit of soy sauce, which works to enhance that umami beef flavor. The pearl couscous (also known as Israeli couscous) has a lighter texture than hardy barley but it works just as well here, providing a nice chew.

  • 1 28-oz can diced tomatoes (undrained)
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (or 2 tsp dried thyme)
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 large carrots, peeled and finely chopped
  • 2 ribs celery, finely chopped
  • 2 lbs beef chuck roast
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ cup pearl couscous (also called Israeli couscous)
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley
  • In the base of your slow cooker, combine the diced tomatoes and their juice, tomato paste, beef broth, soy sauce, stirring until well mixed. Add the thyme, bay leaves, onion, garlic, carrots, celery.

  • Season the beef all over with salt and pepper; add to the slow cooker, pushing it down to cover with the liquid. Cover and cook on low until the beef is so tender that it can easily be pulled apart with a fork, 9-10 hours (or cook on high for 6-7 hours)

  • Transfer the beef to a large plate or cutting board and use two forks to shred into bite-size chunks, discarding any pieces of fat and gristle. Discard the bay leaves.

  • Stir the pearl couscous into the soup in the slow cooker. Cover and cook until tender, 10-15 minutes. Return the shredded beef to the soup. Add the parsley. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if desired. Serve.

The common risk factor of nearly all disease and cancer is age. Unfortunately, our strong, disease-fighting bodies from early adulthood aren’t quite as resilient by the time we reach our 60s and 70s. Though cancer does not discriminate – and impacts people of all ages – 25 percent of new cancer diagnoses are in people between the ages of 65 and 74, according to the National Cancer Institute. Lung, prostate, breast and colorectal cancers are the ones that most commonly occur in this age group.

For many diagnosed with cancer, decades of the Standard American Diet have already done lasting damage. While the Genesis 1:29 diet of primarily raw foods does have the power to fuel the body’s self-healing capabilities and restore health, protecting the body should begin much sooner. Though leaders in the field have long known the impact of aging on health, new data has revealed that doctors ought to pay more attention to the immune system as it relates to cancer risk.

As Science Daily reported, researchers from the University of Dundee concluded that though global initiatives to combat cancer focus on gene mutations, the real answer in preventing cancer from developing has to do with the aging immune system. Hypothesizing that older immune systems are tied to a higher risk for cancer, the team from Dundee analyzed data from 2 million cancer cases in people ages 18 to 70. Using an equation they created, the researchers compared their hypothesis to 100 cancer cases.

“Nearly all of the mainstream research into cancer is based on how we can understand genetic mutations, target them and thereby cure the disease,” said senior author and Professor of Biophysics and Systems Biology at Dundee Dr. Thea Newman. “We’re not debating the fact that mutations cause cancer, but are asking whether mutations alone can account for the rapid rise in cancer incidence with age when [aging] causes other profound changes in the body.”

According to Science Daily, a diminishing thymus gland is to blame for the aging of the immune system. Every 16 years, the size of the thymus decreases by 50 percent, which also decreases the number of cancer- and invader-fighting T cells. As the researchers reported, this decline in T cells was linked to an increased risk for several cancers.

Professor Clare Blackburn of the University of Edinburgh, an expert in thymus biology and also of the Dundee research team, noted that though further research is needed there is the potential to improve the functioning of the thymus by a controlled means. For example, transplant could help boost the number of T cells that the body makes, which in turn equips it with more cancer cell fighting power. Controlled regeneration of the T cells was also proposed, Science Daily reported.

External Factors
Another factor long linked to cancer diagnosis also has to do with the amount of time you’ve spent on this earth. According to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, age is an obvious risk factor merely because of how many years spent exposed to harmful and toxic carcinogens thought to cause cancer and other diseases. These carcinogenic particles come from pollution, the food you eat, sunlight and household cleaning products, to name a few.

Ingredients:

For the cake:

3 cups walnuts, soaked overnight, drained and dried
1 cup raw, unsweetened carob powder – try Hallelujah Diet raw carob powder
1 cup medjool dates, pitted

1 tablespoon ground flaxseed

Try this delicious treat that uses a multitude of fruits and seasonings to reach a remarkable depth of flavor.

Ingredients:

For the cinnamon pastry:

1 cup almonds
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1/2 tablespoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon distilled water
Sprinkle of sea salt

For the blueberry jam:

1/2 cup blueberries, plus 12 blueberries set aside for garnish
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
1 tablespoon agave

Directions:

First, combine all cinnamon pastry ingredients in a food processor. Add more water to reach smooth consistency if necessary. Set aside.

Place all blueberry jam ingredients in the food processor, mixing until smooth.

Take the cinnamon pastry mix and press it into a tart mold. Then, place blueberry jam in a pastry bag and pipe the mixture over the cinnamon pastry. Garnish the tart with reserved blueberries and enjoy!

3. Coconut Banana Cream Pie with Carob Sauce

Ingredients:

For the pie filling:

2 fresh bananas
4 frozen bananas
2/3 cup dates, pitted
1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut

For the date-nut pie crust:

1 cup pecans
1 cup walnuts
1 cup dates
1/4 cup honey
1/4 teaspoon sea salt

For the carob sauce:

2 tablespoons oil
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup water
3 tablespoons tahini
3 teaspoons molasses
1/3 cup Hallelujah Diet raw carob powder
1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Directions:

First, create your pie filling. Place fresh bananas and dates in a blender, mixing until smooth. Then, add the frozen bananas, and process until just mixed. Add coconut, pulsing softly. Set the mixture aside.

To create the pie crust, process pecans, walnuts and dates until they're well-chopped. Stop the processor, add honey, and then pulse until the mixture just holds together, making sure not to over process. Remove the pie crust from the food processor, and it press into the bottom and sides of a pie plate.

Once the pie crust is ready, pour in the pie filling. Sprinkle with coconut flakes,and  then place the pie in the freezer to set for at least one hour.

As soon as you're ready to enjoy the pie, remove from it freezer, and create the carob sauce. Simply mix all ingredients in a small bowl, and then place the mixture in a saucepan over medium heat. Let it simmer until thickened, and then drizzle over the pie. Enjoy!
